Two-stroke engine running cycle: The piston moves upward in the cylinder, drawing the fuel/ air mixture into the crankcase while at the same time compressing the mixture prior to ignition. The fuel/air mixture is ignited when the piston reaches the top of its travel, and the combustion drives the piston down in the cylinder, resulting in power output. As the piston descends in the cylinder, it releases the exhaust gas through the exhaust port and draws the fresh fuel/air mixture into the cylinder through the intake ports.
